Vegan MoFo Day 7: Big Pine Provisions Soft Opening

This past weekend, our store–Big Pine Provisions–opened its doors. As a part of the local foods movement here in Roanoke, I’m proud to announce that Big Pine Provisions is the source for all your local grocery items, pre-packaged meals and sides (local food, made convenient!), as well as a lunch counter. Currently, we feature the trout our farm raises, local pork and buffalo, produce (like local arugula, bell peppers, turnips, butternuts, sweet potatoes, etc.), local eggs, local dairy, local raw unfiltered apple cider, local cheese (gouda + semi-hard goat cheeses), locally roasted certified organic coffee, all the jams-sauces-tomato sauces-fruit butters-purees-condiments that I’ve been canning since June, and prepackaged convenience food (gouda & sweet potato pierogies, vegetable soups and chowders, tamales, etc.).

While everything isn’t vegan, I’m doing a lot to focus on vegan and gluten-free foods here.  All of the canned goods are vegan–pickles, beet & apple puree, vanilla scented pear butter, etc.–and all of the soups I make will be vegan.  As far as baked goods go, while they aren’t necessarily gluten-free or vegan, I’m going to be doing as much as possible to make them so.  The store certainly isn’t vegan, but a lot of it is!  Local produce!  Local canned goods!  Locally-sourced desserts & soups & sandwiches & salads!  I hope we become the vegan destination in Roanoke, for sure.  (smile)

Our soft opening was Saturday, but we’re open for good now!  Our hours are:

Tuesday-Friday 10-6 pm with a local foods lunch counter from 11-2
Saturday 9-1

Our Twitter is and our Facebook page will be up shortly. The farm’s website is

Yay for local food! It feels so so so good to finally see the store open–this really happening!
