Vegan MoFo Day 8: Pop’s Ice Cream & Soda Bar – Roanoke

While eating vegan in Roanoke is hard, it isn’t impossible, thanks to Brandon & Anna at Pop’s Ice Cream and Soda Bar in the Grandin Village. When I first moved here, I scooped out (pun so intended) the place after hearing that it was a vegetarian sandwich and ice cream shop. While the place isn’t super vegany, there are definitely options, and who doesn’t love an old school soda bar with a disco ball hung from the ceiling, an English phone booth, and sock hoppin’ record nights on the weekends?

Several sandwiches can be veganized and this is one of my favorites: the Swiss Melt minus the swiss cheese. It has slices of avocados, tomatoes & artichokes with dijon mustard & horseradish. Multi-grain bread, of course, though they do carry a gluten-free loaf which G. had on his southwestern melt (also easy to veganize–take off the cheese, add avocado and you have a spicy black bean spread with avocado & tomato on the bread of your choice) and was quite tasty! I also had a cup of African peanut soup (vegan too!), and every sandwich order comes with a smiley potato face and a scoopful of seasoned popcorn (Cajun blend this time). The sandwich is super tasty–who doesn’t love tons of avocado & tomatoes??!!–and the soup totally hit the spot tonight: peanuty with a hint of warm heat, peppers, potatoes, and some other unidentifiable veggies mixed in. And Cajun popcorn? Yes, please!

If you’re ever in the region and looking for a treat, hit them up! They’re closed Monday & Tuesday, but open every other day.

  1. How cool! All restaurants should have disco balls hanging from the ceiling! :D

The smiley potato face is kind of creepy, I would have to eat it first!

Again, I’m not vegan at all, but that looks so good!

It’s a little smiley face french fry! I used to think those were cool when I was younger, lol. That sandwich sounds yummy. I love putting avocado on sandwiches.

Pop’s definitely went on the list of good things in our new neighborhood when I found it on the internet. I had the black bean sandwich last time we were there – very yummy. And I love that Layla doesn’t have the usual option of french fries – automatically a healthier lunch – just eliminate that battle and have popcorn instead. Though of course she will still have ice cream – but it’s local so it’s healthier, right?!
