Vegan MoFo Day 13: Red Jasmine Thai–Roanoke
The more I think about it, the more vegan options I come up with in Roanoke–just not in the places you’d imagine them. Red Jasmine is one of those places–an out-of-the-way Thai restaurant in a sleepy factory suburb of Roanoke (Vinton). Not much is in Vinton, but it seems to be filling in with some decent places. Think comfort food. Nothing too exciting, but something good in general.
Out of the four(ish) Thai restaurants in Roanoke, Red Jasmine doesn’t get the most praise. Tong’s Thai is everyone’s favorite. But Tong’s was closed for the first year I lived here, and its new incarnation, Thai Continental, isn’t everything it used to be (apparently). I like the place, but Red Jasmine has my heart, if only for one reason: they make the food hot enough there.
I’m convinced, actually, that they think I’m a joke–a white girl who claims she wants it hot, super hot, but a white girl who can’t handle it. So every time I’m there, after I’ve had a few bites, the server comes out and asks how the heat is. “Too hot?” No, I tell her, and she stops, stares at me, and says, “Really? Are you sure?” I assure her it’s perfect, exactly what I like, and she exclaims that I’m the only one that likes it that way. Which is fine by me, if they’re adding peppers in the back, thinking they’ll laugh–it’s what I want and I’ll always frequent them for that reason. Oh, and the vegan options? Plentiful. Just ask for whatever you want with tofu and vegetables instead of the meat. They get it. And they’ll like you if you like it hot.
