Huynh’s Restaurant–Richmond

This post is going to be short and sweet–the sanding tonight caught up to me. On Saturday night in Richmond, G & I were able to share dinner with my uncle and his wife at a Vietnamese restaurant in town. Although I was itching to try Mekong, my uncle said that a restaurant right across the street (and a little bit down) was better and worth checking out. Thus we ended up eating at Huynh’s Restaurant out in Henrico County (the ‘burbs, as it may be).

While G ordered a bowl of pho, no veg pho options were available (or veg soup options), so I went with the grilled tofu platter–lemongrass marinated tofu grilled and served with rice paper wrappers, vermicelli, basil, carrots, cucumbers, and a peanut dipping sauce.

I’m a big fan of these Vietnamese platters, if only because you get to play with your food and roll it up before eating–who doesn’t like that?–and because there’s always a ton of food. The leftover noodles and tofu fed me quite well for lunch on Monday at work. As for the taste? Good but not out of this world. Huynh’s seems to be a solid Vietnamese restaurant, but it lacked some of the oompah of flavor I was expecting. Definitely good, but not the best I’ve ever had. But since veg Vietnamese food is nonexistent in Roanoke, I’ll take good whenever I can get it!

    I’ve never been to a Vietnamese restaurant since going vegan so this looks so good to me. You have access to lots of great vegan options :)

    we haven’t been to Huynh’s yet only because we love Mekong so much! although i want to say there aren’t any vegan soup options there either. not many in town, that’s for sure, but we always ask every time we go so that maybe some day everyone will start using veggie stock. there’s a thai place out in the “west end” on broad street called Chaddar Thai and they have veggie soup options. just ask them to make it vegetarian with vegetable broth and they totally will – they’re really cool and have quite a few veggie options as well (and we always ask for no fish sauce). your lemon grass tofus look good though and those platters are filling and leave ya with some pretty tasty leftovers. w00t!

    I LOVE this place. Next time you should try mekong (http://www.mekongva.com/) as well. Get the tofu spring rolls. They are to die for!

    Your meal looks so good! I love eating at 821 Cafe when in Richmond. They have a lot of vegan options and their artichoke sandwhich is amazing!
